STUDENTS: OUR AMBASSADORS OF ENERGY CONSERVATION

8th May 2018

My Dear Students, Assalam-o- Alaikum

I hope you are doing well in your studies.

All of us use energy every day, every minute—getting from one place to another, cooking, heating and cooling rooms, manufacturing products, and entertainment. Energy is consumed as we live.

We require energy to make our lives comfortable, productive, and enjoyable. Most of that energy comes from non-renewable sources. It is important that we use our energy resources wisely.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation:

The choices we make about how we use energy have environmental and economic impacts. There are many steps that we can take to optimize energy consumption. These actions include both energy conservation and energy efficiency. Energy conservation is any action or behaviour that results in using less energy. Energy efficiency focuses on technologies that use less energy to perform the same tasks or the same amount of work. Buying a dryer that uses less energy is an example of energy efficiency. Drying clothes outside on sunny days is an example of energy conservation.

I am sure you are aware of ongoing energy crisis in the country.

This is because of power shortages and systemic losses.

Power shortages occur due to insufficient supply of electricity. The demand keeps on changing due to inefficient use of electricity. Generating power requires lots of resources and efforts. Therefore, the power produced should be used as judiciously as possible. Unfortunately the consumers’indifference towards saving electricity is one of the reasons for increase in the rate of power consumption. This wastage of electricity can be noticed in our homes, offices and even in schools.

It is time that we should seriously consider energy conservation which certainly is one of the most potent and cost-effective option being exercised all over the world.

Government of Sindh has launched an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program. As future leaders, students are our priority as we approach them to become part of this program and act as our “Ambassadors for energy conservation”.

What can you do?

You can contribute by remembering some of the following dos and dont’s:

Dos:

· Use the daylight smartly.

· When not needed, switch off the lights and fans.

· Use energy saving appliances.

· Replace the high consumption bulbs with LEDs.

· Close the doors and windows when AC is being used.

· Regularly clean theAC filter.

· Clean the ice of refrigerator regularly, it saves energy.

· Keep your refrigerator away from the wall.

· Use timers to turn things On and Off.

Don’ts:

· Don’t use lights with higher watts when fewer watts are sufficient.

· Don’t keep the temperature of AC below 25 degrees Celsius.

· Avoid buying low quality rechargeable appliances.

· Don’t use high energy consuming tools (like Iron) during peak hours (6pm to 11pm).

By making energy conservation as your habit you can save energy in your education institutes, homes and can also influence your surroundings.Once adopted, these energy conservation measures will give you and your families the opportunity to see how these low-cost and no-cost measures can make a substantial difference in lowering energy use and its cost. I am confident thatyour efforts to save energy will make a difference in mitigating thepower shortages.

Thank you.

God bless you
